Early Modern European Bookbindings
at the Edward Worth Library.
The Worth Library has a marvellous collection of bookbindings from Ireland, England, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. Worth was a connoisseur collector, evidently interested in the Book as Material Object.
He not only bought many books for their bindings but also had much of his collection rebound in Dublin in the early eighteenth century. His wonderfully preserved collection enables historians of bookbinding to see bindings in an incredible state of preservation. The August 2013 Book of the Month is about a binding belonging to Pierre Séguier, Chancellor of France (1588-1672). To find out more about other French bindings at the Worth Library see the small exhibition on French Bindings at the Worth Library.
