History of Medicine
Many of our annual exhibitions have drawn attention to the richness of Worth’s medical holdings: ‘Infectious Diseases at the Edward Worth Library’; ‘Surgery at the Edward Worth Library’; ‘Anatomy at the Edward Worth Library and the Old Anatomy Museum of Trinity College Dublin’, and ‘The Practice of Medicine in Early Modern Europe’. These now form learning resources as part of the Society of Apothecaries ‘History of Medicine’ postgraduate course.

The Worth Library is delighted to be involved with the History of Medicine module which forms part of the curriculum of First-Year medical students at Trinity College Dublin. In addition we have held a number of conferences related to the history of medicine in early modern Europe. Most recently the Edward Worth Library and Centre for the Study of Medicine and the Body in the Renaissance organised a very successful joint conference on the topic ‘Medical Education in Europe, 1350-1750’. In 2026 the Worth Library became a partner institution of the CSMBR.

In addition, Worth’s medical collections have been explored in a number of publications and podcasts and blogposts called ‘Books of the Month‘.
